The Incident Command System (ICS) is a standardised approach to the command, control and coordination of an emergency response. ICS integrates multiple agencies and resources into a functioning operation, focusing on stabilising an incident, quickly and efficiently. These courses aim to prepare hazard incident management organisations, to execute operations more efficiently.

BASIC INCIDENT COMMAND SYSTEM

This course addresses the skills required to fulfill a supervisory role in an incident command structure. It equips you with an understanding of the necessary functions and responsibilities, core competency skills and terminologies relating to an incident.

COURSE OUTLINE

Unit Standard – 376881

Define the positions and the functions of role players in the Incident Command System matrix.

Demonstrate knowledge of the positions and terms associated with the ICS system.

Describe the control functions or responsibilities and application to the ICS.

Pre-Requisite: NQF Level 2

ICS FOR EXPANDING INCIDENTS

The Incident Command System (ICS), is a standardised, on-scene, all-risk, incident management concept. ICS is the result of decades of lessons learned in the organisation and management of emergency incidents. It is a proven management system based on successful practices.

Once completed the individual should:
Describe how the ICS (NIMS) Command and Management component supports the management of expanding incidents.
Describe the incident/event management process for supervisors and expanding incidents as prescribed by ICS.
Implement the incident management process on a simulated expanding incident.
Develop an Incident Action Plan for a simulated incident.

COURSE OUTLINE

Meet the needs of incidents of any kind or size.

Be usable for routine events or complex emergency incidents.

Allow personnel from a variety of agencies to meld rapidly into a conventional management structure.

Provide logistical and administrative support to ensure that operational staff can meet incident objectives

Be cost effective by avoiding duplication efforts.

Fire, both structural and wildfire

Hazardous material situations

Search and rescue

Oil Spills

Pest eradication

Control of animal diseases and

Planned events, such as parades or political rallies
