The Information Technology End-user Computing course is a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Level 3 registered qualification. This course will earn you 24 credits towards National Certificate – IT: End User Computing. We designed this course for individuals requiring a certified basic computer skills qualification. It teaches the fundamentals and IT principles of computers and empowers learners to function confidently in the digital world.

COURSE OUTLINE

Use a Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based spreadsheet application to solve a given problem:

Unit Standard – 116940

Plan, produce and use spreadsheets to solve problems using GUI-based spreadsheet application either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career needing this competency, like the ICT industry.

Unit standard outlines:

Prepare and produce a spreadsheet to provide a solution to a given problem.

Adjust settings to customise the view and preferences of the spreadsheet application.

Work with multiple worksheets.

Apply formulae to worksheets to provide alternative solutions to a problem.

Apply simple built-in functions of the spreadsheet application to the given problem.

Apply formatting to a spreadsheet relevant to the given problem.

Use special effects to improve the presentation of the spreadsheet.

Evaluate a spreadsheet.

Use electronic mail to send and receive messages:

Unit Standard – 116945

Intended for people who use electronic mail to send and receive messages either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career in the ICT industry.

Unit standards outlines:

Understand the concepts and terms of electronic messaging.

Create and send an email message.

Receive and respond to emails.

Work with multiple email messages.

Adjust settings to customise the view and preferences of the email application.

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the internet and the world-wide-web:

Unit Standard – 115391

Intended for people who need to grasp the principles of the internet and the world-wide-web and how it incorporates internet applications.

Describe the concepts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the use of its components in a safe manner:

Unit Standard – 117925

This unit standard is intended for people who need a fundamental understanding of the concepts of ICT either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career.

Unit standard outlines:

Describe the components of ICT.

Describe the hardware components of a personal computer.

Describe software for personal computers.

Describe information networks about ICT.

Describe ergonomic principles for computer workstations.

Explain health and safety when working with computers.

Setup a computer workstation taking ergonomic principles and health and safety issues into account.

Advanced formatting of documents using a GUI-based word processor either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career needing this competency, like the ICT industry.

Use a GUI-based word processor to enhance a document through the use of tables and columns:

Enhance document appearance using a GUI-based word processor either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career needing this competency, like the ICT industry.

Unit standard outlines:

Create and edit a table.

Format a table according to given requirements.

Create and edit columns in a document.

Format columns in a document.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IT: END-USER COMPUTING

The purpose of the qualification is to build the knowledge and skills required by learners in End-User Computing. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently in the End-User Computing environment in the South African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment.

COURSE OUTLINE

Word processing
Format documents; Enhance a Microsoft document through the use of tables and columns; Create merged documents.
Power Point Presentation
Prepare and produce a presentation according to a given brief; Enhance presentation appearance.
Spreadsheets
Create and edit spreadsheets; Solve a given problem; Enhance the functionality and apply graphs/charts to spreadsheets.
Using the internet and email
Enhance, edit and organise emails using a GUI-based messaging application; Use email to send and receive messages.
Use computer technology to research a computer topic; Principles of the internet and the world-wide-web; Searching the internet.
Basic PC and IT Concepts (ICT)
Principles of computer networks; Computer architecture concepts; Data communication; Preventative maintenance, including environmental and safety issues; Concepts of ICT and the use of its components healthily and safely.
Databases
Solve given problems; Working with simple databases.
Fundamentals
Fundamental English first language and HIV/Aids; Fundamental Mathematics.
Workplace Learning
The qualification includes a compulsory Work Integrated Component.
