Tiling Course Short Course

Learners’ who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to set out and prepare work surfaces for tiling, mix the correct quantities of adhesive and grout in accordance with manufacturers specifications and apply standard tiles to plastered surfaces in accordance with the design and construction methods specified in working drawings for houses of a basic design ensuring that the applicable National Building standards, health and safety regulations and prescribed time frames are adhered to.

Course Curriculum

Set out work for tiling

  • The correct work area is identified in accordance with drawing specifications or owner requirements.
  • A work task is communicated and agreed.
  • The work area is measured and set out in accordance with drawing specifications.

 

Prepare work surface for tiling

  • Protrusions are removed.
  • Appropriate materials, tools and equipment are identified and correctly used.
  • Surface defects and cracks are identified and corrected

 

Mix adhesive and grout

  • Adhesive and grout mixes are identified and mixed in accordance with specifications and specific work requirements.
  • The implications of mixing grout incorrectly are understood.
  • Quantities of batched mixes are correctly estimated and applied.

 

Tile plastered walls

  • Tiles are cut and applied to plastered walls and columns with tile adhesive.
  • Tiles are applied to line and level.
  • Gaps between tiles are uniform and have been grouted with tile grout
