Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to lay flexible and rigid segmented paving for architectural or residential purposes and in areas where light traffic is experienced in accordance with the design and construction method specified in working drawings ensuring that National Building and Occupational Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.

  • Types of aids and methods for setting out geometrical shapes such as curves, segments, circles etc. – range of aids: tapes, lines, survey instruments.
  • Sub base materials (range of materials: gravel, cement stabilised soil, crushed stone, cemented crushed stone or gravel).
  • Sub-base compaction equipment (compacted density – strength).
  • Types of bedding sand and grading for paving and jointing.
    • SABS 1200 MJ – Segmented paving.
    • SABS 1575 – Burnt clay paving units.
    • SABS 1058 – Concrete paving units.
    • SABS 927 – Pre-cast concrete kerbs and channels.
  • Types and grades of bedding sand.
    • SABS 1575 – Burnt clay paving units.
    • SABS 927 – Pre-cast concrete kerbs and channels.
  • Different types of mortar (i.e. class 1, class 2).
  • Class 1 – 1 in 3 mix (1 cement to three parts sand by volume).
  • Methods for removing mortar stains i.e. sponging, water spraying.
  • Health and Safety Legislation applicable within the context of this unit standard.

Prepare work area and select, use and maintain tools, equipment & materials

  • Appropriate tools equipment and materials are selected.
  • Tools and equipment are functional.

 

Clear site vegetation, set out levels, falls and extent (Geometric configuration) of paving

  • Vegetation and existing structures are removed from the area to be paved.
  • Extent (geometric configuration) is set out accurately.

 

Excavate soil and compact sub-grade and import sub-grade materials (if required), level and compact
