Completing this course will enable you to:

The learner will perform tasks in support of and to enhance the effectiveness of life safety and fire control efforts at a fire incident, and be able to pursue a career in an emergency service.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand the basic principles of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA) and accompanying Regulations.
  • Explain the requirements for minimum compliance stipulated in the Act.
  • Interpret the management controls required to achieve compliance.
  • Understand the record keeping required by the Act.
  • Explain the obligations of managers regarding communication and training.
  • Explain the principles of advanced primary emergency care in all health emergencies.
  • Sustain advanced level of preparedness to deal with emergencies in the workplace.
  • Assess and manage a multiple injured emergency scene/disaster in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology of the human body and the specific disorders and diseases relating to each system.
  • Apply primary emergency life support for adults in the workplace.
  • Explain and manage shock.
  • Conduct a secondary assessment of the sick or injured person(s) and maintain appropriate primary emergency care.
  • Reduce the risks of loss due to fire through hazard identification, inspection and education.
  • Size up a vehicle rescue incident.
  • Establish scene safety.
  • Stabilise a vehicle.
  • Determine and create access and egress points for rescue.
  • Disentangle and remove victim(s) from a motor vehicle, working as a member of a team.
  • Terminate a vehicle rescue incident.
  • Function effectively within the context of an emergency service organisation.
  • Communicate emergency and non-emergency information.
  • Perform basic emergency scene activities safely.
