This course, “Basic Emergency First Aid Responder,” equips learners with foundational knowledge and skills for providing essential first aid during emergencies. Designed at NQF Level 2 with 2 credits, it is aimed at enabling participants to assess and manage emergencies within a basic, regulated scope of care.
Upon successful completion, learners will be capable of performing primary assessments, identifying life-threatening conditions, managing injuries, and providing basic first aid care to stabilize individuals until professional help arrives. Skills include CPR, wound care, managing shock, and handling fractures, burns, and other trauma.
Knowledge Module:
Fundamental Principles of First Aid: This part introduces learners to the basic principles and objectives of emergency first aid, including the importance of safety, patient assessment, and the ABCs of first aid (Airway, Breathing, Circulation). It also covers the role and responsibilities of a basic first aider within a regulated scope of practice.
Human Anatomy Basics: Learners gain a foundational understanding of human anatomy, focusing on critical systems such as respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal. This knowledge supports effective identification and management of life-threatening injuries.
Recognition of Injuries and Illnesses: This section teaches students to recognize symptoms of various conditions like bleeding, fractures, shock, and respiratory distress. Understanding these symptoms enables learners to provide appropriate first aid treatment in emergencies.
Practical Skills Module:
Emergency Assessment and Scene Safety: Students learn to assess emergency scenes for safety, identify hazards, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others before delivering first aid.
First Aid Techniques: CPR and AED Use: Training includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, both manual and with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), tailored for adults, children, and infants.
Wound and Bleeding Management: This skill involves handling different types of wounds and applying techniques to control bleeding using dressings and pressure bandages.
Management of Breathing Difficulties: Covers responses to choking and breathing difficulties, emphasizing quick, accurate action.
Handling of Unconscious Patients: Instruction in safely placing an unconscious person in the recovery position to maintain airway patency and prevent further harm.
Trauma Management: Learners practice treating fractures, dislocations, burns, and handling shock to prevent worsening of the injured person’s condition.
Simulated Real-World Practice: Practical sessions simulate real-life scenarios where students role-play different roles (first aider, patient, bystander) to build confidence, decision-making, and effective communication.
Assessment and Documentation:
Communication with Emergency Services: Effective interaction with emergency services is a crucial skill, including the accurate transfer of patient information and incident details.
Post-Incident Scene Management: Covers guidelines on post-incident cleanup and documenting the incident, which are essential for compliance and safety in workplace settings.
Assessment:
Learners are assessed through both theoretical and practical evaluations. Simulations replicate emergency scenarios where participants demonstrate their first aid competencies under time constraints and realistic conditions. Feedback is provided post-simulation to help reinforce correct techniques and improve any areas of weakness.
This curriculum prepares participants not only for the technical aspects of first aid but also emphasizes the importance of personal safety, communication, and legal/ethical considerations in emergency settings. The structured progression from knowledge acquisition to hands-on practice ensures a comprehensive, competency-based learning experience that aligns with industry standards and legal requirements in South Africa.
