Course Curriculum

Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in cross-cutting

  • Implications of unplanned cross-cutting and lack of controls during cross-cutting are explained in terms of cost, safety, operational efficiency and physical environmental impacts.
  • The role of the cross-cutter as part of a team is explained in order to comply with safety standards and to optimise production.
  • Factors influencing cross-cutting productivity are stated in terms of section 12.2 of the Handbook.

 

Prepare for cross-cutting

  • Safety requirements applicable to the specific operation are explained.
  • All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.
  • Chainsaw and equipment are checked for completeness and serviceability, and corrective action is taken, if required.

 

Demonstrate knowledge of chainsaw parts and basic mechanics

  • External components of a chainsaw and their functions are explained in terms of industry-accepted standards.
  • Component parts of saw chain, chain dimensions, parts of a cutter and chip removal are explained in terms of industry-accepted standard.
  • The mechanical function, types of chain drive sprockets and sprocket wear are explained in terms of industry-accepted standards.

 

Health and safety hazards related to chainsaw use are explained in terms of Industry-accepted standards

Cutters are sharpened and depth gauges set in terms of manufacturer’s requirements or industry accepted standards
