Completing this course will enable you to

  • Collect information and organise activities for refractory brickwork/blockwork installation and repair.
  • Install refractory bricks/blocks.
  • Remove and re-instate damaged refractory brickwork/blockwork.
  • Perform end of working activities.

  • Chemical compositions of bricks/blocks. Use and functions of refractory bricks/blocks.
  • Identifying defective/non-conforming bricks/blocks.

 

Technique and equipment knowledge

  • The principles of mixing refractory mortar and concrete.
  • The principles of applying, placing and curing of refractory bricks/blocks.
  • Selection of application method(s) for installing refractory bricks/blocks.
  • The usage and function of equipment and tools.
  • Standard operating procedures and quality control.
  • Different positions and zones of the refractory lining.
  • Brick/block laying principles.

 

Safety and legislation

  • Relevant safety requirements, hazards and procedures at his/her workplace.
  • Applicable legislation and specification within this sub-field.
  • Hazards associated with laying bricks/blocks.
  • Use and functions of appropriate personal protective equipment.
