Applying Screeds to a Concrete Floor Short Course

Learners’ who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to apply screeds to concrete floors in accordance with the design and construction methods specified in working drawings for houses of a basic design ensuring that the applicable National Building standards, health and safety regulations and prescribed time frames are adhered to.

Course Curriculum

Prepare floors

  • The concrete slab is thoroughly cleaned.
  • The slab is checked and level.
  • The concrete slab is dampened.

 

Apply a damp proof course on the concrete slab where required

  • The concrete slab is thoroughly cleaned.
  • The damp proof course is spread.
  • The damp proof course is undamaged.

 

Apply screeds to floors

  • A sand (levelling) screed is mixed and applied to the concrete floor.
  • The surface is cured and completed in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Completed surfaces are protected against damage.

 

Apply float finish where required

  • Steel float finish is applied in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Wood float finish is applied in accordance with specified requirements.
  • All surfaces are straight and even when completed i.e. free of bumps or hollows and free of tool marks.
